How to Ship Your Knives to Us
We don't send out packaging kits before your order can start — that's a big part of why Gentleman Knives moves faster than other mail-in sharpening services. You ship your knives to us in whatever safe packaging you already have at home, and we get started the moment they arrive. No waiting on a kit to show up first.
Here's everything you need to know to package your knives safely for the trip.
What to ship them in
Almost anything rigid and appropriately sized works:
A small cardboard box (a repurposed shipping box is perfect)
A padded (bubble) mailer, optimal for smaller knives
A rigid mailer or flat-rate box from the post office
Avoid plain paper envelopes or anything soft with no structure — a blade can push through paper alone, which isn't safe for you, for us, or for your mail carrier.
Don't have a box or mailer on hand? We recommend picking one up at a local hardware store. With same-day or next-day delivery in most areas, you can have something to ship in almost as fast as you decided to send your knives.
How to pack them safely
Wrap each blade individually. Use a folded piece of paper, cardboard, or cloth around just the blade portion — not the whole knife. The goal is to fully cover the sharp edge.
Never tape directly onto the blade. If you're using tape to hold the wrap in place, only let it stick to the wrap itself (paper-to-paper), never to the metal. Tape stuck to the blade can leave residue on a freshly sharpened edge, and it makes the wrap harder to remove safely.
Keep the point covered too, not just the cutting edge — points can poke through a loose wrap just as easily.
Make sure nothing can shift during transit. Once wrapped, your knives shouldn't be able to slide around loosely inside the box. Fill empty space with paper, a towel, or other soft material so everything stays put.
For a single large knife, choose a box or mailer long enough to fit it without bending or forcing it in.
Seal the box well with packing tape along every seam.
A few things to double check before you drop it off
Address label is clearly visible and secure
Nothing sharp is pressing against the inside of the box wall
The box doesn't feel like it could open or crush in transit
Your responsibility for packaging
While we handle every knife with care once it arrives, you're responsible for packaging your items safely for shipment. Gentleman Knives is not liable for injury or damage that results from inadequate or unsafe packaging. If you're ever unsure how to pack something safely, reach out to us before shipping — we're happy to help.
This is separate from our shipping loss/damage policy — our shipping terms for what's covered if a package is lost or damaged in transit is what’s provided by the carrier.
